VA Long Term Care Benefit (Aid and Attendance)

If you have served active duty in the United States military, you may be eligible for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit. This long term care benefit is available to veterans and the surviving spouses of veterans who require the aid and attendance of another person, or are housebound, and currently spending their monthly income on unreimbursed medical or nursing services. Common examples of unreimbursed medical or nursing services include In-Home Care, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Care Nursing Home, and monthly Health Insurance Premiums. Excessive income and assets may disqualify you from this benefit program, however, there are potential legal strategies available to initiate or preserve eligibility.

The current maximum benefit amount for a married veteran who meets eligibility criteria is $2,169 per month, for a single veteran is $1,829 per month, and for the surviving spouse of a veteran is $1,176 per month. This income tax-free benefit is paid out by the VA to the 2 recipient’s checking account by direct deposit. The VA Aid and Attendance benefit can often make additional long term care options viable and affordable for the veteran and their family.

The elder law attorneys at our firm are all accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and assist veterans and their families in understanding eligibility criteria as well as submitting successful applications to the VA for this valuable long term care benefit.
